Tourist
Destinations and Site-Seeing
Orange County has many great tourist destinations
that combine great scenery with local color and
a wide variety of activities and adventures that
appeal to the whole family. Listed below are just
a few of the Orange County jewels that are all
within a 20 minute drive from any Pats Cup Hotel.
Dana
Point
Located about halfway between Los Angeles and
San Diego on the southern Orange County coast,
Dana Point Harbor is truly one of the most spectacular
man-made harbors in the world. The harbor and
adjacent city are named after Richard Henry
Dana, who, in 1835 at the age of 19, sailed
around Cape Horn aboard the trading brig "Pilgrim"
in search of cowhides for Boston shoe factories.
Upon his return, he wrote the book "Two Years
Before The Mast". In his book he had the following
to say:
"San Juan is the only romantic spot in California.
The country here for several miles is high table-land,
running boldly to the shore, and breaking off
in a steep hill, at the foot of which the waters
of the Pacific are constantly dashing. For several
miles the water washes the very base of the
hill, or breaks upon ledges and fragments of
rocks which run out into the sea. Just where
we landed was a small cove, or `bight,` which
gave us, at high tide, a few square feet of
sand-beach between the sea and the bottom of
the hill. This was the only landing place. Directly
before us, rose the perpendicular height of
four or five hundred feet."
Richard Henry Dana off Dana
Point in his book "Two Years Before The Mast"
San
Juan Capistrano
"The
Jewel of the Missions" has been the center
of Orange County since its founding by Padre
Junipero Serra on November 1, 1776. Today it
is one of California's most important historical,
cultural, and educational centers. The Mission
is the seventh of 21 Spanish Missions established
in California by Franciscan Padres. Spain controlled
California until 1821, when Mexico won its independence.
In 1845, the Mission was sold for $710 to Don
Juan Forster. His family lived at the Mission
for 20 years. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln returned
the Mission to the Catholic Church. In 1915,
Mary Pickford was married in the Mission chapel.
Areas of interest within the Mission walls
include early adobe barracks, Friars' quarters,
olive millstone, cemetery, aqueduct system,
the beautiful gardens, and the original Stone
Church. The Church was completed in 1797 and
partially destroyed by earthquake in 1806.
Laguna Beach
Laguna
Beach is Southern California's premier seaside
artist haven. Quaint cottages amidst subtropical
gardens line bluffs above sandy coves along
a seven mile scenic coastline. Inland, luxuriant
foliage and seaview homes cover lower canyons
and ridges of hills that rise more than 1,000
feet above the ocean. Artists began arriving
here over a century ago to enjoy the year-round,
picture-postcard weather. Today, visitors from
around the world come to Laguna Beach to enjoy
the many superb art galleries and restaurants,
many with breathtaking sunset views.
San Clemente
The
City of San Clemente spans fifteen square miles
of coastline and scenic foothills. The location
of the City, long admired by explorers and passing
settlers, remained virtually uninhabited until
1776, when Mission San Juan Capistrano was established
by Father Junipero Serra and led both Indian
and Spanish settlers to set up villages nearby.
In 1969, an event occurred which accelerated
the growth and reputation of San Clemente. In
that year former President Nixon purchased a
Spanish mansion in the southern part of town
that Hamilton Cotton had built in 1927. This
"Western White House" became the site of numerous
historical meetings. Despite rapid subsequent
growth, the City today maintains its small-town
atmosphere.
San Clemente boasts "the world's finest climate",
with sunshine 342 days per year. The annual
average temperature is 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
Old Towne Orange
Old
Towne Orange dates from 1871 and contains the
largest number of buildings in one place within
California, that are listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Old Towne Orange, established in 1886 as the
hub for shopping and socializing in the city
of Orange, is still a mecca for shoppers and
diners 100 years later. Antique stores and restaurants
line the streets that meet at the town's center,
the traffic circle.
Newport Beach
Newport
Beach California has often been referred to
as the "Colorful Coast" and is one
of Southern California's most vibrant recreation
and entertainment centers. Famous worldwide
for its picturesque sandy beaches, majestic
coastline, infinite recreational activities,
award-winning dining and world-class shopping,
Newport Beach is more than a sophisticated beach
town - it's a way of life.
Newport
Beach is so rich in wonderful things to see
and do that you could spend weeks here and still
not manage to do and see them all. It's not
only the proximity to all of these activity
and recreational options that makes this city
such an ideal jumping-off point. It's also the
fact that returning to Newport Beach at the
end of the day feels so relaxing, so rewarding,
so... right that it's like taking a vacation
from your vacation.
You
just haven't eaten out until you've eaten out
in Newport Beach. There are a number of reasons
for this. The seafood restaurants, of course,
benefit hugely from their proximity to the ocean.
For well over a century, the city has been home
to an active fishing fleet whose haul from the
ocean has had to meet the exacting demands of
local restaurateurs and satisfy the discriminating
tastes of diners who know what outstanding fresh
fish tastes like. Unless you catch and prepare
it yourself, you'd be hard pressed to find fish
and other seafood as delectably fresh as what
you'll find in Newport Beach's many outstanding
eateries.
The
ocean plays another role, too - that of a backdrop.
Along the waterfront, as you would expect, the
restaurants look out at the ocean and the harbor.
But the dramatic, swiftly ascending landscape
of Newport Beach enables many restaurants that
are not right on the water to provide their
guests with commanding, panoramic views of Newport
Beach's beautiful, accessible seascape.
Balboa Island
Within Newport Harbor, on the Coast of Orange
County, California, protected from ocean storms
and surf, sits Balboa Island. Balboa Island
is one of Southern
California’s most well-known tourist destinations.
The Island’s charming appeal is the reason
many choose to call it home. In the Summertime,
the Bayfront is lined with joggers, children
and summertime visitors eating Balboa Bars.
In the serene winters, sometimes all one can
hear is the sound of halyard lines beating against
their masts and an occasional seagull. Balboa
Island is a wonderful place, both for residents
and visitors alike. As we arrive in the 21st
Century, it is reassuring to know that there
are still a few places left on the planet like
Balboa Island, California.
- Directions from John Wayne/Orange County
Airport:
Exit the airport and turn right on Campus Drive
Turn left on Bristol Avenue
Turn right on Jamboree Road and drive west for
approximately 5 miles till it crosses Pacific
Coast Highway. Staying in the middle lane, you'll
go down a small hill, and directly ahead of
you, you'll see the Balboa Island bridge.

- Pageant
of the Masters - Where Art Comes To Life
Laguna
Beach
July 7th - August 29th, Gala Benefit
August 30th
Each
night during the summer season at 8:30 the Festival
of Arts presents its most famous attraction,
the Pageant of the Masters.
What
is it?
Ninety
minutes of "living pictures" - incredibly
faithful art re-creations of classical and contemporary
works with real people posing to look exactly
like their counterparts in the original pieces.
An outdoor amphitheater, professional orchestra,
original score, live narration, intricate sets,
sophisticated lighting, expert staff, and hundreds
of dedicated volunteers have won recognition
for the Pageant as the best presentation of
its kind.
- Festival
of Arts - The Premier Art Experience
Laguna
Beach
July 6th - August 29th
California's finest Summer art event is staged
in a six-acre canyon park near the ocean in
Laguna Beach. The stars of this summertime tradition,
which began here in 1932, are 140 of the Southland's
most accomplished artists. This is a rigorously
juried show, requiring exhibitors to demonstrate
and maintain high aesthetic standards. Their
work is truly fine art! The artworks on display
are for sale and represent a complete spectrum
of art media: paintings, sculpture, pastels,
drawings, serigraphs, photographs, ceramics,
jewelry, etched and stained glass, weaving,
fiber arts, handcrafted furniture, musical instruments,
model ships, and even scrimshaw. All of the
works are original art - another element that
distinguishes the Festival of Arts from other
shows. The Festival is the perfect place to
find affordable and unique works of art to decorate
your home or business.
